Dead Inside, but Having Fun Anyways
Hi, hello, and welcome to I'm Dead Inside. We're a brand filled with everything you love: rainbows, flowers, cute animals, existential dread, self-loathing, etc. You get it.
I'm Dead Inside was started by Rachel Dorough and Elana Katz, two women with backgrounds in design and eCommerce who just couldn't get over the funny juxtaposition of cutesy images paired with deeply dark messages. This is a safe space for people who are in on the joke too, but we understand that not everyone is laughing. That's why we're giving back with each purchase to organizations that help with drug addiction and suicide prevention. We have a personal connection to these organizations and we hope that our items will help brighten your day whether you're dealing with a connection of your own or just, you know, really feel dead inside. It's okay to feel that way, and it's okay to laugh about it too. There's nothing that a dark sense of humor can't cure. (Except not really. We believe in therapy, meds, and getting all of the help you need.)
Thoughts from Rachel
Everyone has has a unique story and dealt with their own issues, and I'm no exception. My story started 6 years ago when my older brother Wade overdosed from heroine at the age of 24 - a day that changed my life forever. My brother was someone who always inspired me and made me laugh, which is why I want to do the same for other people. "I’m dead inside" is a phrase that I saw on a T-shirt, and when I did, I just knew it was my brand. It’s a phrase that I connected to and was just so me. It was a phrase that I got on a deep level, but it has that dramatic vibe that just makes you chuckle. Anyone who knows me would say that I'm someone who is always smiling and laughing. The idea of the brand really just came from the idea of someone going through shit and feeling this way, but accompanying that feeling with these cute smiling illustrations that just totally contradict it. It’s just darn right funny and, if you're like me, it'll make you smile. My hope for this brand is to spread addiction and suicide awareness since it has become apart of me. A portion of proceeds will be donated from every purchase to an organization that is helping people and their families and a few smiles along with it. I'm glad you're here.
Thoughts from Elana
If there are two things you should know about me it's that I love a dark sense of humor and if I have the chance to give myself more work than I need to, I'll do it in a heartbeat. When Rachel came to me with this idea, instead of supporting her from a distance, I inserted myself completely and made her let me help make this happen. Luckily for me, she obliged and here we are. As someone who has been close to people who have suffered from addiction, depression, and either suicide or suicidal thoughts, I've spent a lot of my life trying to help fix people. Since I finally learned the lesson that that's not how that works, I'm hoping that this can be my way of giving back. I also think most people can find joy in laughing about their problems. And if you don't, well, I don't want to know you. The phrase "don't talk to me" surrounded by rainbows is 100% my aesthetic and if you're an introvert who loves cutesy things too, well, have we the brand for you.
